SSDS Thursday Swing Dances
[SSDS Logo] Thursday Swing Dances
SSDS sponsors weekly dances to recorded music on Thursdays from 8:30 pm to 11 pm in a NEW VENUE: Knights of Columbus, 5976 East Taft Road, to allow swing dancers of all levels to practice and meet other dancers. Dancers are encouraged to dance with as many different people as possible, so no steady partners are necessary. Dress is casual.

These dances are smoke free, and on a spacious, hardwood dance floor. The K of C has a good size parking lot, in a safe environment.

Our music mix favors swing dances, yet we do play a wide variety. Our DJs read the pulse of the crowd, and select tunes to get most of the people dancing most of the time. In our neighborhood this means a lot of West Coast Swing (contemporary, r&b, blues, funk), a decent amount of Lindy and East Coast Swing (big band swing, jump blues, jazz, lounge, r&r) and Hustle, and some Cha-Cha, Two Step, Salsa, Night Club Two Step, etc. We have an extensive collection of music, which we keep up-to-date with the latest in all genres. Feel free to bring your favorite CDs; we welcome requests. Please let us know if there is a contingency of dancers from other dance communities; we can throw in a few waltz, Argentine tango, rumba, or bachata for you :)

DJ Schedule:
Week 1 - Isaias Banegas
Week 2 - Steve Ryan & Can Isik
Week 3 - Steve Ryan & Can Isik
Week 4 - Maria Cirino
Week 5 - Luck of the draw

Dancers of all ages at all levels are welcome. An informal jitterbug/east coast swing lesson is offered for beginners around 9pm to get them started. This lesson is held in a separate area, without interrupting the ongoing dance. Please tell the person at the door or the DJ you came for the lesson, and he/she will set you up.

The fee for the Swing Dance is $5. If you paid for a dance lesson in Syracuse area, you get in that Thursday's dance for $3; our way of supporting people who invest in their dancing. This fee is the main source of revenue for SSDS. It is used to pay rent and other operating expenses, subsidize workshops and special events, and to purchase CDs and equipment.

You can enjoy our Thursday Dances for free, by taking a 1/2 hour turn at the door. Contact Alice if you are interested. You should definitely look at our previous door coordinator Dave's invitations.

Please help us publicize these dances. Flyer in pdf (acrobat) format (90K)
